Eco Friendly Clothing More Than Green It Is Fashionable

Not that long ago there was no such thing as eco friendly clothing and while it is still far from main stream it is at least something most of us are aware of if not wearing just yet.

There is nothing strange about the fabrics being used for eco fashions. Fabrics like organic cotton, bamboo, hemp and soy are very beautiful, often soft, can be very easy to care for and are available in designs that don't shout hippie fashion anymore but are being designed in styles we all can love.

The biggest advantage though to eco friendly fabrics is the environmentally friendly way these crops are grown and the fibers processed and now it often involves more than just the fabrics themselves. More and more it includes concern for the people involved in growing and manufacturing clothing.

Fashion, No Friend To The Environment

Creating clothing is a very large fast paced industry that consumes huge quantities of materials and resources and until recently has paid little attention to those who make the clothing, how crops are grown, how synthetic materials are produced or the waste that is involved.

We are starting to see a shift in focus to being more eco friendly and ethical but many challenges lie ahead. Not only must the fashion industry make big changes but you and I must also be willing to change some of our buying habits. Learn more by visiting eco fashion.

Is Eco Friendly Clothing A Trend Or Is It Here To Stay?

I suppose that depends to a great extent on you and me and whether we will include eco clothing in our wardrobes and a few things should make it an easier choice.

# We have more fabric choices.
New and different fabrics are being used that lend themselves to a wider variety of styles. Large and small retail stores are starting to carry at least a few items made from eco friendly materials. It may take some looking but they are there. It's a start.

# There is more interest from designers.

More designers than ever are working with the new eco friendly fabrics and they have a bigger showcase as green fashions play a bigger part of Fashion Week each year.

# A wider variety of prices makes eco fashion more accessible.
It seems most would agree that eco clothing is more expensive but growing organically, treating workers fairly or creating fabrics in the most environmentally sensitive way costs more. In fact, I am suspicious if I find cheap clothing with a tag that says it's green or organic. I suspect that upon closer look these clothes are not as green as they claim.

If eco friendly clothing is in your future the next step is to learn about the different fabrics both natural and manmade that are being used and how to make sure that what you are buying is really green.

Eco Friendly Clothing Fabric Choices

Natural Fibers
Natural fibers that have been grown and then processed in environmentally responsible ways have the added benefit of being biodegradeable while synthetic materials are not.

Organic cotton
This soft easy to care for fabric is the most used and most popular of all the eco fabrics. There are no limits to it's use. It's being made into clothing of all kinds from underwear to jeans and is a popular choice for infant wear.

Hemp
Hemp has suffered from a poor reputation but new ways of working with it has created some surprising results. It works well on it's own but also when blended with other fabric yarns. It offers quite a bit of versatility, making this fabric an eco friendly fashion choice worth considering.

Bamboo
This is a new environmentally friendly fabric and one of the softest. It is fast growing and needs little care so there is great interest in using it. For relaxed style you can't beat bamboo.

SoyAnother soft fabric that makes a good choice for baby clothes, yoga wear and pajamas.

Manmade Fibers
Tencel
This fiber is created by taking wood pulp and processing it to make fabric. Manufacturers are working on improvements in processing that are making this a good option for eco friendly clothing while giving us more flexibility to our clothing designs.

Eco Fi (originally called Eco Spun)
This fabric made from recycled plastic bottles is being used in clothing from fleece outerwear, sweaters, caps, totes and even t-shirts.

Recycled Fashion

Recycled Fashion When looking to build a greener wardrobe consider adding resale and recycled clothing. Both take advantage of materials and clothing that already exist but are given a new life while saving resources and energy over creating new. Resale is particularly fun. You can wear designer clothing yet pay so much less. It's also exciting to see what designers can do with factory remnants that were destined for the trash.

Being green.... wedding dress. Could be two separate subjects but then again maybe not. Women willing to part with their wedding dress once they have worn it provide a wonderful opportunity for someone looking to wear something beautiful, be green (something that already exists is the greenest choice) and enjoy some savings. Check out some great ideas for used wedding dresses from Carbon Footprint Defined.

Eco-Friendly Clothing: More Than Green, It Is Fashionable

In recent years, there has been a significant shift towards sustainability and eco-conscious living. This transformation has extended into the fashion industry, where consumers are increasingly demanding environmentally friendly clothing options. Eco-friendly clothing is no longer seen as a niche market; it has become a mainstream trend that combines style with sustainability. In this article, we will explore the world of eco-friendly fashion, discuss its importance, highlight the benefits, and address common questions about sustainable clothing.

Section 1: Understanding Eco-Friendly Clothing

1.1 What is Eco-Friendly Clothing?

Eco-friendly clothing, also known as sustainable or green clothing, is created with a strong commitment to minimizing the environmental impact of the fashion industry. It focuses on using sustainable materials, ethical manufacturing processes, and eco-conscious design principles to reduce harm to the planet and its inhabitants.

1.2 Sustainable Materials

Eco-friendly clothing relies on materials that are renewable, biodegradable, or produced with minimal environmental impact. Common sustainable materials include organic cotton, hemp, Tencel, bamboo, and recycled fabrics like PET (polyethylene terephthalate) from plastic bottles.

1.3 Ethical Manufacturing

Beyond materials, sustainable fashion prioritizes ethical manufacturing practices. This involves fair wages, safe working conditions, and responsible labor practices throughout the supply chain. Brands committed to sustainability often support fair trade and ethical certifications.

Section 2: The Importance of Eco-Friendly Clothing

2.1 Reducing Environmental Impact

The fashion industry is known for its heavy environmental footprint, including water pollution, excessive waste, and carbon emissions. Eco-friendly clothing aims to mitigate these effects by using sustainable materials and reducing waste through recycling and upcycling.

2.2 Preserving Natural Resources

The fashion industry consumes vast amounts of water and resources. Sustainable fashion seeks to reduce the pressure on natural resources by promoting eco-conscious practices like organic farming and water-efficient dyeing techniques.

2.3 Ethical Considerations

Eco-friendly clothing addresses not only environmental concerns but also ethical ones. It raises awareness about fair labor practices, workers' rights, and the impact of exploitative labor in the fashion industry. By supporting ethical brands, consumers can contribute to positive change.

Section 3: Benefits of Eco-Friendly Clothing

3.1 Environmental Benefits

Reduced Pollution: Sustainable fashion reduces the release of harmful chemicals and dyes into waterways, minimizing water pollution.
Lower Carbon Footprint: Sustainable materials and ethical manufacturing processes lead to a lower carbon footprint.
Conservation of Resources: Eco-friendly clothing promotes responsible resource management and reduces overconsumption.
3.2 Health Benefits

Reduced Exposure to Harmful Chemicals: Conventional clothing often contains chemical residues from pesticides and synthetic dyes. Eco-friendly clothing minimizes exposure to these chemicals.
Allergen Reduction: Natural, organic fibers used in sustainable clothing are less likely to cause skin irritations or allergies.
3.3 Ethical Benefits

Support for Fair Labor: Purchasing eco-friendly clothing supports brands that uphold fair labor practices and workers' rights.
Conscious Consumerism: Sustainable fashion encourages mindful consumption and aligns with ethical consumer choices.
Section 4: Common Questions About Eco-Friendly Clothing

4.1 Is eco-friendly clothing more expensive?

While eco-friendly clothing can sometimes come with a higher upfront cost, it's essential to consider the long-term benefits. Sustainable clothing is often of higher quality, more durable, and less likely to need frequent replacement, potentially saving money in the long run. Additionally, as demand for sustainable fashion grows, price differentials are narrowing.

4.2 How can I identify eco-friendly clothing brands?

Look for certifications and labels that indicate a brand's commitment to sustainability, such as Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Fair Trade, OEKO-TEX Standard 100, or B Corp certification. Also, research a brand's mission, transparency, and sustainability practices on its website and through customer reviews.

4.3 Are there eco-friendly options for all clothing types?

Yes, eco-friendly options are available for various clothing types, including casual wear, activewear, formal attire, and accessories. Sustainable brands offer a wide range of products, from everyday basics to high-end fashion.

4.4 What can I do to make my wardrobe more eco-friendly?

Start by evaluating your current wardrobe and identifying items you no longer need. Consider donating or selling clothing in good condition. When shopping, choose eco-friendly brands, buy secondhand, and prioritize quality over quantity. By making conscious choices, you can gradually transform your wardrobe into a more sustainable one.

4.5 Is eco-friendly clothing only for certain demographics?

No, eco-friendly clothing is inclusive and accessible to people of all demographics. Sustainable fashion brands offer a wide range of styles, sizes, and price points to cater to diverse consumer preferences.

Eco-friendly clothing is not just a passing trend; it is a movement that aligns fashion with environmental and ethical consciousness. By choosing sustainable clothing options, consumers can reduce their environmental footprint, support ethical labor practices, and contribute to a healthier, more responsible fashion industry. The shift towards eco-friendly fashion is a step towards a more sustainable future where style and ethics coexist harmoniously.

On a daily basis we are exposed to a wide array of chemicals. They are present in products we have come to rely on and use everyday. More often than not our only criteria is that they work but it is equally important to know about the ingredients in these products.

Very little is known about the affects of so many chemicals in our daily life but we do know that our bodies do absorb things through our skin and through inhalation. I tend to use extra precautions all the time and feel it is especially important during pregnancy.

Make it a point to pay attention to products you are using whether it is for skin care and beauty, cleaning around the home, doing fix up jobs, painting and even yardwork. I know from experience of myself and others that this is a time of quite a bit of fixing up and decorating in preparation for the new baby so be careful.

Natural Living Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a transformative journey in a woman's life, marked by physical, emotional, and mental changes. During this period, adopting a natural and holistic approach to health can be beneficial for both the expectant mother and the growing baby. In this article, we will explore natural living tips for a healthy pregnancy, focusing on nutrition, lifestyle, and self-care practices. Additionally, we will address common questions and concerns related to natural pregnancy.

Section 1: Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy

1.1 Eating Whole Foods

Whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, provide essential nutrients for a healthy pregnancy. Aim for a balanced diet that includes a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables to ensure you're getting a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals.

1.2 Organic and Non-GMO Choices

Opt for organic and non-genetically modified organism (GMO) foods when possible. Organic produce and non-GMO products reduce exposure to pesticides and synthetic additives, which can be especially important during pregnancy.

1.3 Hydration

Staying hydrated is crucial during pregnancy to support the increased blood volume and amniotic fluid production. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and consider herbal teas or infused water for added variety.

1.4 Limit Processed Foods

Processed foods often contain excessive sodium, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives. Reducing your intake of processed foods can help maintain a healthy weight and minimize unnecessary additives in your diet.

Section 2: Lifestyle Choices

2.1 Exercise

Regular physical activity can help alleviate common pregnancy discomforts, improve mood, and boost energy levels. Activities like walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, and gentle strength training are generally safe during pregnancy. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise routine.

2.2 Stress Management

Stress during pregnancy can have adverse effects on both the mother and the baby. Incorporate stress-reduction techniques into your daily routine, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or mindfulness practices.

2.3 Sleep

Prioritize sleep to support your body's healing and rejuvenation processes. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night. Use pillows and cushions to find a comfortable sleeping position as your pregnancy progresses.

2.4 Chemical-Free Home

Create a chemical-free environment at home by using natural cleaning products and reducing exposure to synthetic fragrances and harmful chemicals. Opt for eco-friendly and non-toxic household items to maintain a healthy living space.

Section 3: Self-Care Practices

3.1 Prenatal Vitamins

Discuss prenatal vitamin options with your healthcare provider to ensure you are meeting your specific nutritional needs during pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins often contain essential vitamins and minerals like folic acid, iron, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids.

3.2 Holistic Care

Explore holistic healthcare options like chiropractic care, acupuncture, or prenatal massage, as these therapies can provide relief from pregnancy-related discomfort and stress.

3.3 Herbal Remedies

Consult with a qualified herbalist or naturopathic physician to explore safe herbal remedies for common pregnancy symptoms. Some herbs can be beneficial, while others may pose risks, so professional guidance is essential.

3.4 Education and Support

Attend prenatal classes, read books, and seek support from other expectant mothers or support groups. Being well-informed about the changes and challenges of pregnancy can help you make confident and informed decisions.

Section 4: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

4.1 Can I continue my regular exercise routine during pregnancy?

You can continue your regular exercise routine if it's safe and comfortable. However, consult your healthcare provider to ensure that your exercise regimen aligns with your pregnancy. Adjustments and modifications may be necessary as your pregnancy progresses.

4.2 Is it safe to use essential oils during pregnancy?

Certain essential oils can be safe when used in moderation and with proper dilution. However, others can be harmful to pregnant women and their babies. Consult a qualified aromatherapist or healthcare provider before using essential oils during pregnancy.

4.3 Are there foods I should avoid during pregnancy?

Yes, some foods should be avoided or limited during pregnancy, including raw seafood, unpasteurized dairy products, undercooked eggs and meat, and high-mercury fish. It's important to consult your healthcare provider or a registered dietitian for specific dietary recommendations.

4.4 Can natural remedies replace medical care during pregnancy?

Natural remedies can complement medical care but should not replace it. Always consult your healthcare provider for any health concerns or questions during pregnancy. They can provide guidance on the safest and most effective options for you.

4.5 What is a natural birth plan, and should I consider one?

A natural birth plan outlines your preferences for labor and delivery, including pain management, interventions, and the environment in which you give birth. Whether or not to have a natural birth is a personal decision. Discuss your preferences with your healthcare provider and consider factors like your health, previous birth experiences, and support system when making your decision.

Embracing a natural living approach during pregnancy can contribute to a healthier and more fulfilling journey for both you and your baby. By focusing on nutrition, lifestyle choices, and self-care practices, you can enhance your well-being and support the natural processes of pregnancy. Remember that every pregnancy is unique, so consult with your healthcare provider to tailor your approach to your specific needs and circumstances. With the right care and attention, you can experience a natural and healthy pregnancy.

Caring For Your Skin With Natural or Organic Body Care Products

When you choose natural or organic body care products you are making a healthy choice for your skin, your health and you're helping the environment.

Your Skin Is Absorbent

Have you noticed how many medications like nicotine or birth control patches are now being administered through the skin? It has been found to be an efficient way to get them into our systems.

Well, consider the many skin care products you use on your skin every day and the ingredients in those products. Your skin may be absorbing those ingredients. Are these ingredients you feel safe using? If you aren't sure it's time to become a label reader. Make it a point to learn which ingredients are safe and which ones aren't. Check out nontoxic skin care for help with this.

Questionable ingredients in products has some of us switching to organic body care products. Being able to buy skin care products that are truly certified organic is relatively new. It's an idea that appeals to many who support organic products but there is a bit of a problem. Many products are turning up on the market with organic on their labels that are not really an organic product. You have to forget the pretty packaging and product descriptions and read the ingredient list. This is where the real truth about what is in a product can be found.

What you want to see is either a product that displays the USDA certified organic logo or one that contains USDA certified organic ingredients. Check out organic skin care for more information about this. Choosing organic products for your skin care routine can be a very healthy but sometimes an expensive choice. Great ingredients cost more. To help keep keep costs lower keep your routine simple and consider making some of your own organic body care products.

My Organic Body Care Routine

4 Basic Rules

Rule#1 Exfoliate.
Remove dead skin cells to freshen skin and allow your moisturizer to do its job. Salt and sugar scrubs are popular and help to remove dead skin cells as do loofah brushes which are another popular choice.

An Ayate Cloth is natural fiber made from the Agave plant that is good for exfoliating. It comes as a reusable and machine washable washcloth, hand mitt or soap pouch. It feels quite rough when dry but once it is wet softens a bit and becomes a very effective way to exfoliate the skin. May take a bit to get used to but once you do I think you will enjoy it. Just be careful not to rub to hard especially at first. It lasts for a long time making it very affordable.

I also like an old technique that has been around for many years called dry skin brushing. It has been found to be very effective in removing dead skin cells but it also stimulates pores to help eliminate toxins. (For how to do this technique see skin brushing.)

Make your own fresh organic body care products. Homemade exfoliants are easy and inexpensive when using ingredients you have in your kitchen. You will find recipes on this pages that are good for the face and the body. Don't forget your hands. They often show age. I often use the same products on my hands that I use on my face.

Rule#2 Cleanse.
Gently cleaning without over cleansing and removing all of the skins natural oils is important to help keep the skin from becoming dry and uncomfortable. Many soaps create problems when they are overly harsh . Organic body care products like organic soaps that clean without stripping away all natural oils is a great way to go. Or consider one of my favorite products Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps Pure-Castile Soap. I like how this certified organic soap gently cleans, smells great from the essential oils and cleans so well and if you need something to read the bottle is quite interesting. (you have to see it to understand this.)

While your thinking about cleansing your skin have you given any thought to the water that comes out of your shower. If you are using a water filter to eliminate impurities in your drinking water you may want to consider a shower water filter to prevent these same impurities from being absorbed by your skin.

Rule#3 Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize.
I don't have to tell you that do I? Depending on your needs and the time of year a light lotion might be sufficient but for really dry skin a natural body butter could be the answer.

Body butters are an important part of moisturizing for women around the world. They are an excellant way to help in prevent moisture loss for all skin types especially during dry hot weather or cold weather and indoor heat.

Many varieties of body butter exist from shea to mango, macadamia nut, illipe and many others. Shea butter while one of my favorites is not an organic product but you can buy good quality shea products that are naturally grown without pesticides and minimally processed so I feel safe using them. Visit my page on shea butter for more info about this wonderful moisturizing and anti aging ingredient.

Check out Amazon for a great selection of organic body butters or visit Terressentials for a wonderful selection of USDA certified 100% organic body care products like Seductive Spice Annoiting Body Oils or Passionate Lavender Body Creme in a handy push up bar.

Rule#4 Protect.
By now we all know how important is is to wear sunscreen not only to protect from sun damage and aging but also to help prevent skin cancer. Here is where it is hard to be organic.

The safest products for sun protection have been found to be mineral based such as titanium dioxide or zinc. While these are natural ingredients they are not organic. It is possible to find sunscreens that contain organic ingredients though. I have had good luck using Badger Balm Sunscreen. It is mineral based, rated very well by the Skin Deep Database for effectiveness, dries quite clear and contains organic ingredients.

Organic body care products can be an important part of a healthy skin care routine. They're good for you and they give you another opportunity to support organic growing.

Caring for Your Skin with Natural or Organic Body Care Products

3.3 Shea Butter

Shea butter is a rich and nourishing ingredient that helps lock in moisture and provides relief for dry, irritated skin. It is commonly found in body creams and lotions.

3.4 Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it suitable for addressing acne and other skin issues. It is often used in cleansers and spot treatments.

Section 4: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What Are Your Choices For Natural Anti-Aging Skin Care?

Can natural anti-aging skin care products turn back or slow the progress of wrinkles, thinning or sagging skin. I don't know about you but I would like to find out.

The next best solution to aging skin is advertised to us all the time in magazines or television ads and it's hard to resist some of the claims. After all who does not want less lines and wrinkles or want their skin to have some of that same glow it had when we were younger.

Anti aging products are some of the most popular skin care products being made. While natural ingredients seem to be used very frequently this is an area where some chemical intervention is common and these products along with all skin care products may contain harmful or even toxic ingredients. Unfortunately, some of the big name companies who promote these products haven't signed the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and some still use animal testing for their ingredients and products.

A check through the Skin Deep Database from the EWG (this is a database of ingredients and products that rates their safety) showed that many of the most popular anti aging skin care products received a high hazard rating. See nontoxic skin care for more info about what ingredients to watch out for in our skin care products.

A great solution is safe, natural anti-aging skin care products and we are lucky to have so many choices available to us. Lets' see if we can sort through some of our best options and find a skin care routine that works. One that keeps our skin looking it's best.

Caring For Your Skin

As time passes our skin care needs change but our basic skin care routine doesn't. We need to treat our skin well no matter what our age and we start that by knowing our skin type, dry, normal, oily plus sensitive and mature and following a skin care routine based on this knowledge.

The Basics
  • Daily
  • Cleanse
  • Tone
  • Moisturize
  • Protect
  • Weekly or more often
  • Exfoliate
  • Facials and Masks

It could be this simple. Some of the best dermatologists out there tell us it should be. We are trying so hard to fight the aging process that we are trying just about any new product which claims to work and it's scary the extremes some of us choose. A simple easy to use and effective routine can be found by using natural anti-aging products.

Exfoliation
This is possibly one of the most important things you can do for aging skin. The older we get our skin becomes slower at creating new cells which give our skin a younger smoother look. When you exfoliate your skin you help remove the dead skin cells on the surface and encourage skin to more rapidly create new cells for a more youthful appearance.

Natural options for face exfoliants come from lotions and scrubs to brushes, cloths or other devises designed for removing dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion is an example of this. Save some money and make you own. With just a few simple ingredients that most of us have in our own kitchens you can make simple, fresh and effective homemade exfoliants. Make exfoliation a big part of your skin care routine and for best results make sure to do this at least once a week.

Natural Anti-Aging Creams and Lotions

Once all those dead skin cells are removed your skin is ready for some moisture to keep new cells plumped up. Creams and lotions made from natural ingredients can be an important part of any natural anti-aging skin care routine to help diminish fine lines and wrinkles and even to firm and tighten the skin.

An amazing array of ingredients like green tea, pomegranate, fruit enzymes, essential oils, sea weed, vitamins, minerals and more are being used in natural anti-aging skin care products.

Many women are seeing results with products that read more like a yummy recipe that uses fresh natural and even organic ingredients. Chemical ingredients that are currently being used for aging skin aren't the only answer or even the best answer to good anti aging skin care. Know your anti aging ingredients and buy from companies that don't do animal testing.

Facial Exercises

Exercises for facial muscles have been around for a long time. If you practice yoga you may already be familiar with some of the facial poses but there are also other exercise programs developed specifically to tighten sagging skin or smooth wrinkles.

There seems to be a big difference of opinion on their effectiveness with many claiming excellent safe results and others saying it doesn't really work and can even help exaggerate wrinkles.

With no clear answers as to what is best, before you try facial exercises read all you can and then decide. This could be an inexpensive effective form of natural anti-aging skin care that improves the look of our skin but we need to understand the process.

Accupressure

This is a fascinating technique of applying gentle pressure to specific points on the face and holding the pressure for a matter of seconds. This technique, practiced for thousands of years in China, tones and tightens the skin. Who knows it may even be an inexpensive alternative to cosmetic surgery.

It is a safe simple process that can be completed in just minutes a day but it is important to have a good understanding of how it works. Section 1: Understanding Natural Anti-Aging Skincare

1.1 What is Natural Anti-Aging Skincare?

Natural anti-aging skincare is a holistic approach to preserving and rejuvenating the skin without resorting to synthetic or chemical-based products. It emphasizes using plant-based ingredients, essential oils, and natural compounds to address the signs of aging and promote skin health.

1.2 Key Principles

Botanical Ingredients: Natural anti-aging skincare relies on botanicals such as aloe vera, green tea, chamomile, and rosehip oil to nourish and rejuvenate the skin.

Antioxidants: Antioxidant-rich ingredients like vitamin C, vitamin E, and coenzyme Q10 help combat free radical damage and promote collagen production.

Hydration: Maintaining skin hydration is essential for a youthful appearance. Natural moisturizers like shea butter, hyaluronic acid, and coconut oil help lock in moisture.

Sun Protection: Protecting the skin from UV damage is crucial for preventing premature aging. Natural sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide offer broad-spectrum protection.

Serums and oils deliver potent doses of active ingredients directly to the skin. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, rosehip oil, and vitamin C help hydrate, brighten, and firm the skin.

Natural masks and exfoliants help improve skin texture and promote cell turnover. Ingredients like clay, oats, and fruit enzymes can gently exfoliate and revitalize the skin.

2.4 Natural Moisturizers

Natural moisturizers are essential for maintaining skin hydration. Look for products containing ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, and jojoba oil to keep your skin soft and supple.

It's All About The Ingredients Finding The Best Natural Cosmetics

When you buy natural cosmetics you expect natural ingredients right? But unless you read the ingredients on your beauty products you won't know for sure? You won't know if it is safe or if the product has been tested on animals? Often cosmetics claim to be natural but contain few natural ingredients and many synthetic ingredients. Do you ever wonder...

Just what are some of those ingredients anyway?
Look back through history a little bit and you'll find what we now know are some very unsafe ingredients that were frequently used for beauty. (Check out the history of makeup for a brief overview.)

One of the big advantages we have today that they didn't have back then was access to plenty of information so if it is important to you to use products whose ingredients are mostly natural and safe then a little research is needed. I have done the research for you and below you will find info that should help make shopping for natural cosmetics easier.

What I Looked For When Choosing Natural Cosmetics

1. Pure Natural Ingredients
Our products didn't start out with all these chemicals but as cosmetics began to be manufactured on a large scale chemicals have been increasingly added through the years to preserve, stabilize and improve them. They became cheaper and had a long shelf life but this moved them farther away from natural to more chemical.

No matter which type of natural cosmetic from lipstick to mineral makeup there are products that contain all or mostly all natural ingredients. These are the ones I like. The real challlenge comes in with products like hair dye or nail polish where it is hard to find something that is effective without the use of some chemicals. Here I help you find those products that use the safest and least amount of chemicals while still being effective.

2. No Animal Testing
This is very important to me for all personal care products and I hope it is to you too.

Synthetic ingredients should be tested for safety and animal testing is a cheap easy way to do that. Fortunately, many companies have found that this form of testing is not necessary but some of the most popular brands of cosmetics still have not come to the same conclusion.

3. Product Safety
We do want our products tested though but the problem is that often testing is done for a particular ingredient. No one tests for all the possible combinations of chemicals we are exposed to everyday and since testing is strictly voluntary for cosmetic companies not all ingredients are tested. In fact only about 10% of the synthetic ingredients used have actually been tested. I find that scary don't you? I feel much safer using products with natural ingredients.

Many different types of beauty products have come under scrutiny lately for their questionable ingredients but fortunately we do have a choice. Truly natural cosmetics could be the answer.

A Few Tips For Shopping For Natural Cosmetics.

  1. When shopping for natural cosmetics always read the label on all skin care and beauty products.
  2. Shop with companies that clearly display their ingredients. Try to familiarize yourself with potentially harmful ones. (You may find it helpful to check out natural skin care for more information.)
  3. Also remember to look for one of the cruelty free logos to make sure your cosmetics have not been tested on animals.

On average prices for natural cosmetics are comparable to those of fine department store brands. Well worth it for what you're getting, great ingredients and safer, natural products. Many of the synthetic ingredients used in products are cheap. That's why some brands are so inexpensive.

You may find as I did that you buy less makeup which is not a bad thing, simply because shopping for natural cosmetics is usually not as easy as running to the local store. I don't have as many spur of the moment purchases.

It's All About the Ingredients: Finding the Best Natural Cosmetics

In a world where beauty and skincare products often contain a long list of unpronounceable chemicals, many individuals are turning to natural cosmetics for healthier and more sustainable options. Natural cosmetics are made from ingredients sourced directly from nature, and they are gaining popularity for their effectiveness and reduced environmental impact. 1.2 Key Principles

Plant-Based Ingredients: Natural cosmetics rely on plant-derived ingredients known for their skincare benefits. These ingredients can include aloe vera, chamomile, lavender, rosehip oil, and green tea extract.

2.2 Avoid Harmful Ingredients

Steer clear of harmful chemicals commonly found in conventional cosmetics. Check labels for ingredients like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. These chemicals can be irritating to the skin and have potential long-term health risks.

2.3 Look for Certifications

Reputable natural cosmetics brands often have certifications like USDA Organic, COSMOS Organic, or Ecocert. These certifications ensure that the products meet specific organic or natural standards and adhere to sustainable and ethical practices.

2.4 Skin Type Consideration

Consider your skin type and specific concerns when choosing natural cosmetics. Some products may be better suited for dry skin, while others are formulated for oily or sensitive skin. Look for products tailored to your needs.

Before applying a new natural cosmetic product to your face or body, perform a patch test on a small area of skin to check for any adverse reactions or allergies. This precaution can help you avoid unexpected skin issues.

Are You Really Using Natural Skin Care Products?

When you choose natural skin care do you look for the word natural on the label? Seems like a good thing to see if you are trying to buy something with pure, natural ingredients, ingredients that come from nature.

Natural is a word that should be a good thing but frequently it's use is misleading. It has been so over used that it has lost it's true meaning. No wonder it's so hard to shop.

Reading The All Important Back Label
For truly natural skin care products you have to know what ingredients are used in your products. At present a company might put natural on their label but after reading the ingredients you may discover that there may be only one natural ingredient and that the rest of the ingredients are synthetic and sometimes even toxic ingredients.

Perhaps you've seen product claims such as "Now with natural aloe vera" or some other natural ingredient printed boldly on the front of the container. It gives the impression that this is a natural product which it could be but you won't know for sure unless you read the labels and know the ingredients.

At this time there are no regulations guiding the use of chemicals in skin care products. And since your skin is capable of absorbing 60% or more of whatever you put on it, I know you want to be sure that what you are using is safe, natural skin care.

From an issue of Alternative Medicine Magazine:
  • 100,000 synthetic chemicals are currently registered for use.
  • Fewer than 10% have been tested for their effects on humans.
  • Increasingly toxic ingredients are found in our cosmetics.
  • Companies are not required to disclose all ingredients.
  • The "trade secret loophole" allows companies to use a generic term such as "fragrance" in place of a list of ingredients.

How to Choose Truly Natural Products
Synthetic ingredients are common in many of the products we use everyday. Chemical preservatives used to preserve a product and extend it's shelf life is one example. Some research has shown that the small amounts typically found in a product are not harmful. That may be true.

What is not taken into consideration is the cumulative effect of these supposedly safe synthetic chemicals found in products we use everyday like face creams, toners, eye shadow, foundations, cleansers, etc., etc., etc. Don't forget to include products you use for your hair. A look at the ingredient list for hair color alone and you might want to look for more natural hair color.

All these different products and different ingredients and no one knows how they will react in our bodies when combined. There are just too many of them to test all the different combinations.

Sounds grim. But it doesn't have to be. There is a solution.

Choose products with a list of easy to understand natural ingredients.

You want products that contain mostly natural ingredients but there are a few other considerations:
    * Learn what ingredients can be harmful. Check out nontoxic skin care.
    * If possible choose organic but make sure it is "certified" organic.
    * Great skin care does not need animal ingredients.
    * Please make sure the company you buy from does not do animal testing.

Where To Shop
All of your skin care products from your cleansers, moisturizers, toners, serums, you name it, can be made with natural and organic ingredients. In fact, it's getting easier to have truly natural skin care thanks to companies who believe really good skin care doesn't need to be tested on animals or to contain synthetic chemicals or animal ingredients.

A few to consider:
    * Aubrey Organics
    * Terressentials
    * Sanre Organic Skinfood

Other Natural Skin Care Products
New products turn up everyday and are promoted as natural. Green tea, chocolate, coffee, aloe and herbs are just a few other ingredients being used. While these natural ingredients may be a better choice make sure to read the rest of the ingredients to make sure it is truly natural. Some of these ingredients sound like a good thing but unless a product has a history of effectiveness it is hard to tell if there is a real benefit.
